A long-time equestrian remembered her first time picking up a mallet in Florida for her first polo lesson. Galloping down an immaculately groomed field on a well-trained pony with the Argentine pro was a thrill – and she knew she found her favorite sport. Quickly hooked, she developed her skills and spent her spare time going to the fields to “stick and ball,” while meeting other players who shared her thrill when they found polo

There are many reasons why polo can be so much fun to play, despite its challenges and risks. Here are some of the key factors.

Thrill and Excitement

The Not-So-Coy Fish Boot has a funny story. The bar next door started having very loud music every weekend and I couldn’t sleep! There is never time to make Boss Lady Boots at work, so I decided I would make my own boots at home. I got myself a pair of noise cancelling headphones and snacks, because if you are gonna be up ‘til 3am, why not have a little fun? In five weeks, or what would have been five hellish weekends, I came into the shop with completed flat pieces of my boots. My employees laughed, “Fish boots?! Ha-Ha!” They didn’t understand my love of Japanese art. So I basically said, “Let’s just do it and do it with a high heel!”

When they were done, I took them on their maiden voyage to New York where I was approached at a restaurant by one of the editors of Vogue and asked, “Where did you get your fabulous boots from?” Because of those boots, Vogue did a story on our boots and I got compliments wherever I went.

When I returned home, I rejoiced that the Fish Boots the guys laughed at were the same boots that were the talk of the town. Our customers think of our boots as big pieces of jewelry. They are wearable art and they are a great conversation piece. You never know who you are going to meet in your Rocketbusters!

This includes dressage, eventing and show jumping. There are no separate men's or women's divisions as the competitions are simply open to everyone!

Whether you are in the world of online dating, seeking a riding partner or have a long term relationship, many of us are seeking new ideas and activities to brighten up our days and bring us closer to our loved ones. Here are some ideas where horses can help!

Go for a sleigh or carriage ride. If you are visiting a ski resort like Vail, they offer sleigh rides which can be a romantic option for two or fun for the whole family. If you prefer an urban setting, there are carriage rides through beautiful Central Park in New York City.
Take a trail ride. Open to all levels of riders from beginners to experienced levels, going on a trail ride give you a chance to see nature or take a tour of historic places on horseback.
Help a rescue organization. Few things are as fulfilling as giving to others and helping animals in need is a great way to spend some time. Rescue and rehoming organizations can always use another set of hands to help with horses and barn tasks. Find a rescue in your area and give them a call!
Go to the horse races. There are many types of horse races including Arabian, Harness, Steeplechase, Thoroughbred, and Quarter Horse racing. It is a great way to spend time as a couple or grab a group of friends and try to win big. Many places have picnic or tailgating areas too. Enjoy!
Visit a horse breeding farm. There are many horse farms that offer tours and activities for visitors including many of the Thoroughbred Breeding farms, just call in advance first. You could learn about how horses are raised and trained, or even take a riding lesson.
Tour a horse retirement farm. Places like Old Friends with locations in Kentucky and New York where you can see former champion race horses is a living hall of fame and a thrill for anyone who loves horses.
Visit equestrian venues to see a horse show. There is always something happening at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, KY, the World Equestrian Center in Ocala, FL and Tryon in Mill Spring, NC. These are amazing places to visit but if you want something more local, check out our Events Calendar to see a show in your area.
Watch a polo match. You can go as a couple, bring friends or the whole family to see this exciting game. During half time, all the spectators go onto the field for the time-honored tradition of “stomping the divots.” See our list of polo clubs and check their schedules for matches.
Take the kids on a pony ride. If you have young kids and want to get them away from their video games, a pony ride is a great option. It may also be cool way for single mom and dad to meet each other’s children for the first time if the children love ponies! Bring mints, ask permission to feed the ponies and then teach the children the proper way to feed the ponies. It may start the life long love of horses.
Watch a horse movie. There are many wonderful movies where the horse is the star of the show. Here are our choices for the 10 best horse movies. It is also a great way to end an evening.
